I took over Fresh Air Fort Collins in mid-August, just about 2 months ago, and I’ve loved every minute of it. I’ve received feedback from readers on how much they love this blog and how helpful it has been to a variety of outdoor adventurists. From families with kids looking for the best campsites, to hikers looking for some trail excitement, to hunters sharing tips. This is exactly why I didn’t want this blog to die on the vine after Chloe finished up after two years of writing.
I think the content and the idea is very much needed in Fort Collins and it’s something that I’m feverishly passionate about.
Over the months some of our blog readers in the network have asked if there’s any way to donate funds to our bloggers to keep us going strong. We’ve never consistently had Paypal donation buttons on our side bars asking to “buy us a cup of coffee!”
But, we also don’t charge for subscriptions. We see how many people dislike paywalls for community information.
The only way we’re compensated and funded is through our advertising sponsors. If you don’t see any ads on the sidebar of our blogs, that means the blogger is doing all of this for free. Fresh Air is one of those blogs without advertising sponsors. There are certainly out-of-pocket expenses associated with outdoor writing – mainly gas for trips up the canyon, food, and State Park fees to name a few. Not only that, I’d like Chris to get paid for his time writing cycling posts, too.
I love writing about interesting things in our city – the things that make Fort Collins, Fort Collins. And I especially enjoy having community conversations with readers. We’re really thankful that readers want to help support us in those efforts.
Because it was asked, we’ve decided to have a Thank a Blogger option this month. There are donation buttons on the sidebar of all of our blogs giving readers an occasion to donate as they wish.
This also brings up the opportunity to ask your thoughts on long-term sustainability of community information in Fort Collins. Online content is (and has always been) in a precarious balance – it’s either supported by advertising dollars or subscriptions. This is not a new challenge by any means, major publications all over are navigating the same predicament, but we’ve been constantly thinking about ways to maintain sustainable balance while providing information in Fort Collins. So, who better to ask than our readers?
We would love to get your two cents – would you support seeing more advertisers on our blogs? Possibly from large companies outside of Fort Collins? Would you ever pay for a subscription for our newsletters? Or a membership subscription for exclusive content? Or would you support a few reader donation drives like this a few times a year, PBS-style?
Let us know what you think and how you would like to see community content supported in Fort Collins.
And thanks so much to our readers who’ve asked for ways to donate! We appreciate you tremendously!
